Course NotesRedundancy: the first step to exciting new horizons!
Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist (ACFS) training Do not let those years of loyal service turn into fears or doubt about your future. Re-assign those valuable skills and personal qualities you have developed throughout your Service career and move forward in a new direction to fulfil your true potential. Perhaps you are looking for a complete career change, or even to continue your present line of work. Whatever your past, you may be interested in becoming an investigator, leading to a wide range of possibilities and horizons. Some examples are listed below:
Investigation requires a multi-skilled approach, including legislation, intelligence, surveillance, evidence gathering and investigative interviewing skills.
Experience has shown that people leaving the Armed Services tend to have a natural leaning towards this type of work. Effective investigation requires a disciplined approach, optimum communication skills, a strategic mind and clear report writing abilities. At RMH Training Services Ltd we are able to capitalise on these talents and direct them towards future opportunities in the ‘investigation’ field. The Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist (ACFS) qualification, accredited through University of Portsmouth, is now a requirement by many organisations that employ investigators. A recent quality review conducted by the University of Portsmouth endorsed the effectiveness of the RMH Training Services Ltd accreditation course, where we train individuals for the role of ACFS. Investigators lead a very fulfilling life, facing a different challenge with every enquiry. Whatever your past, the opportunities are there to train as an investigator – the choice is yours! See the advertisement on page 16 Get on the road to success with Cycle Systems Academy ‘I think we definitely appeal to those wishing to retrain,’ says Julia Lally, co-director of Cycle Systems. ‘Bicycle mechanics is a topic that many people feel passionate about – and of course it’s hugely popular now among the military as a fitness tool as well. As personnel leave, many of them decide to get skills under their belts that will help them build a new career in something they really love. And as the cycle industry is one of the only growing sectors in a largely faltering economy at the moment, it makes sense to follow that passion now more than ever before.’ Certainly, Cycle Systems Academy is, in their opinion, the best-equipped place to learn in the country. ‘We have more industry sponsorship than any other I know of,’ Julia continues. ‘Which means that you don’t just share equipment or pass around a set of high-end forks. Every student has their own workbench, which has been compared by many to the military as everything is so clean and well ordered. High praise indeed!’ Cycle Systems also imparts careers advice, passing both discounts on tools and recommendations to trade suppliers to every student that studies with them. ‘I believe this means we can give high-quality professional training alongside invaluable advice about how to work in the cycle industry, which sets us apart and gives ex-military personnel a real boost in their future career ambitions.’ It would seem that the industry is backing her claims too, as Cycle Systems Academy just won the prestigious Bike Biz ‘Rising Star’ award, which is voted upon by a panel of independent cycle industry experts. Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a common-sense system of everyday psychology that has enhanced millions of lives by showing people how to monitor and adapt their thinking, cultivate more useful inner beliefs, and develop the skills and strategies to more easily achieve their outcomes. Combined, the many benefits of coaching and NLP are now well recognised in the contexts of training, management and leadership, while specialist training and qualification offers a powerful framework for personal, professional and organisational development. PerformancePeople™ is a niche consulting company with a true understanding of the military mindset, a great respect for the military ethos and a real passion for helping military people get the very best from themselves. Under the ELC scheme, it is proud to offer a range of training courses, certified by the Association of Neuro Linguistic Programming (ANLP) and the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), which combine NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner certification with additional qualifications in coaching and mentoring. PerformancePeople™ has a rolling programme of training throughout 2011, while military establishments wishing to sponsor training of their own are invited to do so. Get involved … See the advertisement on page 9 Practical hands-on training from Contour Autocraft There are currently many opportunities for employment within the classic car industry, with many vehicle restoration companies seeking skilled panel beaters and fabricators. This is due to a shortfall in company apprenticeships and training courses offered by further education colleges over the past few decades. The result of this has been a decline in the standards of work offered by many restorers. Contour Autocraft is redressing this balance by offering practical hands-on training through a series of short courses. The courses are focused on teaching traditional hand skills, also incorporating use of modern equipment and methods. The techniques taught are relevant to all aspects of vehicle restoration and repair, panel fabrication and vehicle body construction. Here are just some of the fields in which these skills are employed:
On each course you will benefit from our comprehensive knowledge gained from generations of experience in what is a highly skilled craft occupation.
Each course is run with the individual in mind, allowing time to ask questions particular to your needs. We limit the number of pupils so that you are given a significant amount of one-to-one tuition. A detailed illustrated manual is supplied, which expands on the subjects covered during each course. We have a comprehensive range of well-maintained equipment to meet the needs of each course within a spacious modern workshop. High-quality self-catering accommodation with kitchen/diner, lounge and up-to-date facilities is available on-site. Contour Autocraft is accredited by EAL, which is the leading certification body in the UK. A Certificate of Verified Achievement is awarded on successful completion of each course. These qualifications form part of a level 3 NVQ. For more information visit www.contourautocraft.co.uk, call us on 01406 330504 or email courses@contourautocraft.co.uk. Plenty of useful pre-course information was provided and I felt that I was ready for training on the first day. Both courses were very well explained and the quality of the instruction was very good, with a good balance of practical and written work. The administration staff and the teaching staff were helpful and friendly, and the learning environment was very good. At the end of each course I felt confident that I was well prepared for the examinations. See the advertisement on page 43 Rob Smith, trainer and assessor with Ultimate Performance My 22 years as an RAF Physical Training Instructor came stuttering to its conclusion in July 2006. It’s funny how all of that preparation in the time leading up to the exit date can still leave you feeling rather exposed and, indeed, under-prepared. Since becoming an assessor it has become clear to me that all of that time used up worrying about my skills and abilities was somewhat mis-spent. Everything I did over the course of my RAF career has given me an enviable skill set to take forward into my new career. At this point, I must tell you that this is not the first job I have had since leaving. I spent a couple of years running an Offending Behaviour programme for the Prison Service, which was something of a ‘baptism of fire’. After the stress of that and a reallocation of public funding I found myself once again thinking about a new job. Somehow I ended up working as a manager for a large supermarket chain, which was a totally new experience for someone with my background. So, I found myself at a point in my life where I had to make the decision of whether to stay with the supermarket for the rest of my career or do something altogether more stimulating and rewarding. The first step in the process was to book myself on to the new TAQA (Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance) course, which has replaced the old D32/D33 and A1 assessors course. Looking for a training provider was easy: Ultimate Performance was able to offer me a programme that would see me qualified after a one-week practical course plus some self-study assignments (fast track or what?). Add to this the PTTLS course (also provided by Ultimate Performance) and I was ready to go live with real learners, all of which were provided for me by the company. Too easy! I am now using the full range of my skills and experience delivering apprenticeships for Ultimate Performance in Team Leading, Management, Information Advice and Guidance, Customer Services, Business and Administration, and Retail Skills. I am sure you are starting to get the picture now: so much of what you have achieved in the military is transferable to your future as an assessor and – get this! – there is a huge demand for quality assessors throughout the country. So, if you can see yourself working flexibly while going out to meet people from all different walks of life, and being a major contributor to the development of individuals and their companies, then this is the career for you. Ultimate Performance was set up and is run by ex-military personnel who understand and are able to assist you in realising all of those qualities developed throughout a rewarding and varied career.
